چکیده

We performed numerical simulations of the migration of a supercritical CO2 current in a sloping aquifer in the presence of residual and solubility trapping. Compared to simulations with residual trapping only, when dissolution is accounted for the trapping efficiency is nearly doubled and the speed and maximum up-dip extent of the plume are affected. The saturations in the plume correspond well to transition zones consistent with capillary equilibrium. The pressure gradients slightly ahead of the leading tip of the current remain at the initial values, and that opens up the possibility to use a simple moving boundary to model extremely long aquifers.

A Numerical Simulation Framework for the Design, Management and Optimization of CO2 Sequestration in Subsurface Formations

The overall objective of the project is the development of a numerical framework for the simulation of subsurface CO2 sequestration processes. The following important research areas were pursued simultaneously during this three-year GCEP project: (1) accurate modeling of CO2 trapping by dissolution and residual trapping, (2) analysis and construction of consistent and high-order adaptive implic...

Residual trapping, solubility trapping and capillary pinning complement each other to limit CO2 migration in deep saline aquifers

We derive a theoretical model for the post-injection migration of a CO2 gravity current in a confined, sloping aquifer under the influence of residual trapping, solubility trapping, and capillary pinning. The resulting model consists of two coupled partial differential equations that describe the local thickness of the buoyant CO2 current and the thickness of the mound of brine saturated with d...

A Numerical Simulation Framework for the Design, Management and Optimization of CO2 Sequestration in Subsurface Formations

The objective is to develop a numerical simulation framework for modeling subsurface CO2 sequestration operations. We have made significant progress on several interrelated areas of investigation. The vertical migration of CO2 plumes, which are immiscible with the surrounding brine, was investigated using high-resolution simulation. The flux function for buoyancy driven immiscible flow plays an...

Impact of Tight Horizontal Layers on Dissolution Trapping in Geological Carbon Storage

As a method to reduce atmospheric emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), this greenhouse gas can be separated at large point-sources, compressed and injected into geological formations such as saline aquifers. Several physical features of the fluids and the rock sequester the CO2 in the pores of the rock for geologic time-scales. One such feature is dissolution into the brine, which increases the d...

Scaling Behavior of Convective Mixing, with Application to Geological Storage of CO2

CO2 storage in deep saline aquifers is considered a possible option for mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from anthropogenic sources. Understanding of the underlying mechanisms, such as convective mixing, that affect the long-term fate of the injected CO2 in deep saline aquifers, is of prime importance. We present scaling analysis of the convective mixing of CO2 in saline aquifers based on...
